Wheat Free Dog Treats

Does your dog need wheat free dog treats?

Dogs aren't really designed to eat a lot of grain, and many dog these days are allergic (or sensitive) to wheat and corn.

If your pet has these dog food allergy symptoms then you may need to be more careful about what you are feeding them. Taking grains out of their diet will make them more comfortable. There are several hypoallergenic dog foods on the market - or you can try them on a raw dog food diet.

But as well as main meals, it is important to watch their treats. Many manufactured dog treats these days contain wheat, corn or other ingredients that can effect your pet.

If you are buying treats for you dog then check the ingredients for wheat, maize, corn or grains. There are now several hypoallergenic treats available - check out these vegetarian dog treat reviews and allergy free dog treats to get you started.

Making hypoallergenic dog treats

Another good alternative is to make your own grain free treats. As my pet, Luigi, can't eat wheat, I have several wheat free treat recipes for dogs that I use.

If you need totally gluten free then there is a list on my gluten free dog treats page.

You can easily adapt other treat recipes by substituting a grain-free flour. Here are some that are safe for your dog :

  1. Rice flour - this is easy to get hold of and the one I generally use.
  2. Garbanzo bean (chickpea).
  3. Quinoa.
  4. Tapioca.
  5. Oats - use oatmeal. Don't use for Gluten Free treats.
  6. Amaranth.
  7. Potato flour.
  8. Millet flour.

These flours often don't hold things together as well as wheat - but your four legged friend probably won't mind! Using an egg will help to bind the recipe together. You may also need to experiment a little with the amount of flour you use. I find that about 3/4 cup of rice flour equals about 1 cup of wheat. So add your ingredients slowly to get the right texture on your dough.

Just experiment, and have fun making snacks for your pet!
