Helping my dog with allergies has taken a lot of trial and error. But by changing his diet and watching his treats he is now 'itch free'.
My dog Luigi is a coton-de-tulear - but he is an unusual one because he has a pink nose (instead of a black one).
Even from a puppy Luigi seemed to be always itching. We initially kept him on the food his breeder had given us - and didn't make the connection at all. We took him to the vets several times and they couldn't find any problems with him. It was actually a man in the vet waiting room who had brought his dog, that suggested to us that Luigi may have dog food allergies.
We switched his food to a hypoallergenic dog pellet - and the itching began to ease within the week.
He still had flare ups - and we tracked these down to certain dog treats. Additives and preservatives in shop-bought dog treats seemed to effect him. We also discovered that certain treats we had been using (such as sausages and hot dogs) also contained wheat and made him itch.
I began to make Luigi dog treats - and to put my dog treat recipes on this site to share with everyone.
Although Luigi was now healthier, he didn't really like the taste of the grain-free dog pellets. We tried several varieties but he usually went off them within a few weeks. When he was one we found out about raw dog food diets and made a switch.
To keep things simple we ordered a complete raw food over the internet - this is raw meat already mixed with the nutrition your dog needs such as small amounts of vegetables.
So far this has worked very well for us. Luigi is 3 years old now and loves his diet. The raw food works out less expensive than the allergy free food - and our other dog loves it too.
We are very happy to have found a solution that works for us and our dog.
