Annie's Dog Allergy Story

by Barbara
(Hazelton, ID)

Annie is an 8 year old Rat Terrier and around her third birthday she started chewing, scratching and whatever else she could do to scratch her itch. Did a RAST test and found out that she is allergic to-chicken, wheat, corn, soy, flax seed, kelp, trees, pollen and grasses and dust mites.

We are truck drivers and therefore trying to build up her immunity with shots wasn't practical. Tried various remedies, but to make a long story short, this is what works the best for her. She has 1 capsule of Hydroxizine a day and if she has been having a really bad day sometimes she gets 2 or 3. The Vet also prescribes Temaril-P. I try and keep those to about once a week.

We have found several recipes that are also low in fat. She is very prone to pancreatis. Mostly have to check the can to make sure that they haven't started to use soybean oil-Nature's Recipe did that once with the venison where before they were using canola.

I wish I could find a dry dog food for her that was low in fat. All the ones I've checked have about 15% fat or they have ingredients she can't have.

Ella and Luigi say:

Thanks for sharing Barbara. We are sure Annie's story will be interesting to other owners who have dogs with allergies. And we think Annie is very cute!

Annie takes a bow.

Annie & I both think she is the cutest dog ever. Patches, her sister, sometimes disagrees but to tell the truth, I think they are BOTH adorable- Thanks!
